The Story of Lemorton
Located near Domfront, the Lemorton family produces the best Calvados Domfrontais AOC.
The distillery is located in Mantilly, near Domfront, which gives its name to the Domfrontais region of Calvados. The soil there is mainly composed of clay and limestone, which is perfect for the strong, large and deep roots of pear trees. The Calvados Domfrontais AOC produced by the Lemorton family for five generation is made using between 60-70% of pears blended with the best quality apples grown on their 9 acre property.
The pears are gathered from tall standard pear trees which can reach 20 meters high. This percentage of pears gives the Calvados Domfrontais from Lemorton a more elegant and light character than the Calvados Pays d'Auge.
Lemorton's production is small. They distill the pear and apple cider after 11 months of ageing in oak barrels. Distillation takes place in their single-distillation alembic once a year. The clear distillate then goes into 30 year old barrels, allowing full and refined flavours from the fruits to develop.
